Statistics are very important to databases running quickly. They let SQL know how best to run queries based on the data that has been inserted and the indexes you have setup. I would recommend most people setting up their databases to Auto Update Statistics. If you forgot to set this during the database creation, just run the following command:
ALTER DATABASE YourDBName SET AUTO_UPDATE_STATISTICS ON
If you think it affects performance too much (maybe you have 10,000 users on the system at once), then it might be a good idea to setup a job to run hourly. You can find that setting here:
